Part Time - 35hrs per week, Fixed Term

An opportunity for parental leave cover has arisen within City Transport working in the Engagement and Active Travel Team which aims to increase active travel modes within businesses, communities and schools and reduce single car occupancy. This will increase physical activity, improve and encourage healthy lifestyles and air quality in the city.

You will be responsible for helping to deliver the school active travel behaviour change programme which is reported on and accredited through the Modeshift Stars platform. This will involve working largely with primary schools and other internal teams to help implement school travel plans and encourage walking, scooting, and cycling to school.

You will also be required to lead on partnership working with Modeshift on a project aimed at secondary schools called Active Travel Ambassadors.

You will manage a small group of schools across Bristol and will co-ordinate and on occasion deliver activity within the schools. These will include assemblies, classroom workshops and outdoor sessions promoting active travel, road safety and air quality e.g. benefits of Active Travel sessions, scooter skills, air quality action, bike security marking etc.

You will have experience and confidence to work with groups of children.

You will also be asked to support on other projects within the service. This will include projects such as School Streets, which may involve communicating to the wider public and supporting on the ground during launch weeks.

You will be very organised in order to provide a timely, professional service to schools and to manage a broad workload with multiple events. You will have some experience of supervising others, as you will be working closely with our Schools Sustainable Travel Assistants.

You would need to demonstrate:

  • Experience of behaviour change projects,
  • Be motivated, enthusiastic and a team player,
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Have experience in partnership working within a school-based environment
  • Understand monitoring techniques and analyse datasets

For permanent Bristol City Council employees, this post will be a secondment.

For employees who are currently on a fixed term contract with Bristol City Council, the secondment must not extend beyond the end of the fixed term period to ensure there is a substantive post to return to.

If you are currently a casual worker or a member of an employment agency (currently working with Bristol City Council) this post will be a fixed term contract of 7 to 8 months (depending on start date). The desirable start date is August 10th 2026. Part time and flexible working arrangements can be considered on request.
