Permanent, working 35 hours per week on average over a 4 week rolling rota, your usual working pattern will be:

Weeks 1 & 3

Monday - 06:00 – 14:30 (driving)

Tuesday - 06:00 – 14:30 (driving)

Wednesday – 06:30 – 14:30 (driving)

Thursday – 06:00 – 14:30 (driving)

Friday – 06:00 – 14:30 (driving)

Weeks 2 & 4

Monday – 13:00 – 17:30 (portering)

Tuesday – 12:00 – 19:30 (portering)

Wednesday – 06:30 – 14:30 (driving)

Thursday – 06:00 – 14:30 (driving)

Friday – 06:00 – 14:30 (driving)


This will be your standard work pattern, but some flexibility will be necessary to meet the needs of the service


This is an exciting opportunity to join Bristol Libraries as a Library Porter/Driver based at Bristol Central Library and Fleet Services. We are looking for a motivated individual, with portering and driving experience, excellent communication and organisational skills, and a sound knowledge of safe manual handling practices.


The Central Library is an iconic building that sees approximately 1000 visitors a day, it is a complex building with seven floors including two public floors and a historic reading room; areas of the library are often used for exhibitions and events. Services from Central Library include a lending library for adults and children, a reference library, research and study spaces, computer areas, a business centre, a café and meeting and hire spaces. The library is also the central hub for the distribution of stock and resources across the Bristol Libraries network of 26 libraries.


You will work with a team of library porters and porter drivers to distribute books, stock and resources to all branch libraries in Bristol. You will also work as a porter at Central Library, where you will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the library, managing the book crates that are organised in the basement, as well as assisting in dealing with any security issues that may arise.


In your application, you will need to show that you:

  • Are qualified to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle, including a C1 licence, and have relevant experience.
  • Can work unsupervised and as part of a team.
  • Can move boxes and crates safely following manual handling guidelines.
  • Can communicate with a wide range of people in a wide range of situations.
  • Are equalities aware.
  • Will remain calm in a crisis, taking charge in an emergency.
  • Can provide good customer care.
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft.
