Brislington Transport Depot Bath Road / Sandy Park Road Bristol BS4 3NZBG13: £47,181 - £50,269Full timeCloses: 22/03/2026

Full Time, Fixed Term (Maternity cover)

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Structural Engineer to join our Planned Programmes Service on a fixed‑term maternity cover. This role presents an excellent opportunity to work within the Council’s Housing Team, contributing to projects that make a meaningful and lasting difference to communities across Bristol.

What you'll be doing

The Council owns and manages more than 28,500 residential properties, developed over the past century and located in every ward of the city. We are committed to maintaining and improving this diverse portfolio, delivering safe, sustainable, and high‑quality homes that put our residents first. As a Structural Engineer, you will play a vital role in supporting this mission by providing technical expertise across a wide range of housing projects.

You will be part of the Specialist Project Team, established to meet the evolving demands of our property portfolio. The team is responsible for delivering refurbishment programmes to older housing stock, converting existing properties and community spaces, and designing extensions and structural modifications to meet long‑term housing needs and help reduce the waiting list. You will be involved in managing major development, construction, and refurbishment schemes from initial design through to on‑site delivery and completion.

What you need to have

Based at Sandy Park Depot in Brislington, the role requires a strong understanding of varied construction types and the confidence to manage complex projects, including those involving demolition and significant structural alteration.

We are looking for an individual with a BEng or MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering, or an equivalent qualification, supported by relevant commercial or project experience. You will be an effective communicator, well organised, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team. A sound technical knowledge of steel, reinforced concrete, timber, and load‑bearing masonry structures is essential, along with the ability to design and assess structures in accordance with Eurocodes. Experience using structural design software such as TEKLA Structural Designer, Robot, or TEDDS would be an advantage. The role also involves undertaking site visits, so you must be comfortable accessing works using ladders and scaffolding; holding a full driving licence is essential.

Why Bristol City Council

You'll have the opportunity to work on a varied and rewarding portfolio of projects, from early feasibility and scheme design through to construction and handover. You will undertake site visits across Bristol, working on extensions, refurbishments, and existing‑build developments, and you will need a good understanding of procurement routes and contract management to ensure projects are delivered to a high standard of quality, safety, and value for money.

We are committed to supporting our staff and creating a positive, inclusive working environment. We offer flexible working arrangements to support a healthy work‑life balance, access to a generous Local Government Pension Scheme, competitive annual leave entitlement, mileage allowance where applicable, and opportunities for professional development within a large and high‑profile local authority.
