Our partnership is still relatively new and so we are on an exciting journey, looking to pursue a radical and ambitious change programme to combine the resources of our organisations so that we can achieve more together for our residents.

While retaining their local identities both councils wish to harness their combined capacity to help shape their communities now and in the future.

It’s an ambitious partnership which is good for our councils, good for our residents, good for our staff and could be good for you. Such a time of change presents complex but rewarding professional challenges, and there will be no doubt that you will have plenty of opportunities to develop and diversify your skills if you chose to join us.

About the Role:

Working within the Assets & Investment Directorate, the Buildings Officer will act as the first point of contact for the service area.

They will be responsible for actioning and investigating service requests, overseeing contractor works and supporting the wider Directorate in ensuring it meets its aims and objectives in support of both Council’s Corporate Priorities.

They will be the eyes and ears of the service on the ground ensuring that the Council’s assets are being well maintained and in a safe and compliant condition for both staff, residents and tenants to use.

About the candidate:

You will be a practical, detail focused individual with an understanding of property compliance and facilities management. You will be comfortable working across a wide range of statutory areas—including electrical safety, fire safety, water hygiene, asbestos, gas safety and LOLER—and able to carry out inspections, record findings accurately and support planned and reactive maintenance.

You will be confident using digital tools such as handheld devices, maintaining compliance databases and producing clear reports that help inform decision making. You should also be proactive in identifying issues, recommending solutions and ensuring that Council assets remain safe, functional and fully compliant with legislation.

Equally important is your ability to work reliably and flexibly within a busy operational environment. The role requires someone who can support contractors, supervise works on site, process orders and invoices, and respond professionally to enquiries or complaints.

You will need to remain calm and capable during unplanned situations, including occasional out of hours callouts for emergencies or security issues. A hands on, service oriented mindset is essential, as the role also involves practical facilities support such as room setup, stock monitoring, waste management and ensuring reactive cleaning needs are addressed promptly.

Overall, you will combine technical awareness with strong organisational skills and a commitment to maintaining safe, well managed Council buildings.

Benefits of working here:

You will have the opportunity to work across both Council’s which are located in the south of Essex and approximately 20 miles apart.

The two areas present a blend of characteristics.  Brentwood is well-known for its green space and woodlands, even though it’s located within easy commuting distance of London – and the new Elizabeth Line has made this connection even better, with faster and more frequent trains. Rochford is a mix of urban and rural and London Southend Airport sits within its boundaries.

We are currently operating a hybrid model of working, which enables our employees to work smarter, focusing on the importance of physical connections to meet the needs of those we provide services for, whilst balancing that with the ability to work remotely.  Our employees are provided with the resources to be able to work in this way effectively and are provided with a laptop to do so.
