The Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated individual to lead the Council’s tree inspection programme and manage the day-to-day delivery of our arboricultural operations across Bolton’s parks, open spaces, highways, cemeteries and other Council-owned land.

A key responsibility will be overseeing tree inspections and risk management, ensuring inspections are completed to the required standard, records are maintained and identified works are prioritised and progressed appropriately. You will provide technical arboricultural advice and support the Council in meeting its statutory responsibilities for the safe management of its tree stock.

You will lead and supervise the Council’s tree inspection officers and operational arboriculture teams, allocating workloads, managing resources and monitoring performance to ensure works are completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard. You will also manage contractors, budgets, vehicles and equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety requirements and operational procedures.

The role will support the effective management of Bolton’s trees and woodlands, including planned maintenance, tree planting and woodland management.

We are looking for someone with a strong technical background in arboriculture and proven experience of managing operational teams, contractors, budgets and resources. You will hold a Level 4 qualification or above in Arboriculture and have strong leadership, organisational and communication skills, together with good ICT skills and experience of using GIS and database management systems.

About You

We are looking for an experienced arboricultural professional with a strong background in tree inspection, risk management and operational service delivery. You will have a Level 4 qualification or above in Arboriculture, together with relevant practical experience and a good understanding of tree-related legislation and industry standards.

You will have experience of leading tree inspection officers and operational arboriculture teams, allocating workloads, managing priorities and ensuring inspections and tree works are completed safely and effectively. You will be confident undertaking and overseeing tree inspections, assessing risk and making clear, evidence-based recommendations.

You will have experience of using digital inspection systems, GIS and database systems to record inspections, defects, works and follow-up actions, ensuring accurate records are maintained and inspection programmes can be effectively monitored.

Strong leadership and organisational skills are essential, along with experience of managing contractors, budgets and resources. You will be confident communicating with staff, contractors, residents and other stakeholders and dealing professionally with challenging situations.

You will be proactive, organised and committed to delivering a safe, efficient and high-quality arboricultural service, with a strong focus on health and safety and the effective management of Bolton’s trees and woodlands.

A full, current and valid driving licence and access to an appropriately insured vehicle are required
