The Role

We are seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic individual to support the management, protection and enhancement of Bolton’s natural environment. The postholder will play a key role in helping to conserve biodiversity across the borough’s parks, open spaces, woodlands, wetlands and other green infrastructure assets, ensuring that these areas continue to provide valuable habitats for wildlife whilst supporting community access and enjoyment.

The role will involve providing specialist ecological and environmental advice to support the management and development of Council-owned greenspaces. This will include identifying opportunities to improve habitats, enhance biodiversity and ensure that environmental considerations are incorporated into the planning and delivery of projects across the service.

Working closely with a wide range of partners, including conservation organisations, community groups, volunteers and statutory agencies, the postholder will coordinate and support collaborative initiatives aimed at protecting and enhancing Bolton’s natural assets. A particular focus of the role will be the management, monitoring and development of the borough’s Local Nature Reserves, ensuring they are managed in accordance with best practice and relevant legislation.

The successful candidate will also work in partnership with the Council’s Museums Service and other stakeholders to develop and maintain accurate records relating to habitats, species and ecological interests across Council-owned land. This will include supporting the collection, analysis and management of ecological data to inform management decisions, monitor environmental change and help deliver the Council’s biodiversity objectives.

The role requires a proactive individual with a passion for nature conservation, strong partnership-working skills and the ability to translate ecological knowledge into practical management actions that deliver measurable benefits for wildlife, habitats and local communities.

About You

You will have a passion for nature conservation and biodiversity, together with the knowledge and experience needed to support the management and enhancement of a diverse range of habitats and greenspaces. You will be able to provide specialist ecological advice and work collaboratively with colleagues, partner organisations, volunteers and local communities to deliver positive outcomes for wildlife and the natural environment.

You will have experience of habitat and species management, ecological surveying or environmental project delivery such as Biodiversity Net Gain, together with a good understanding of relevant environmental legislation, policy and best practice. The ability to interpret ecological information and apply it to practical land management decisions is essential.

You will be a confident communicator with strong organisational skills, capable of building effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Experience of working with conservation organisations, community groups or statutory agencies would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will be able to manage and analyse ecological data, maintain accurate records and contribute to the development of habitat and species databases. You will be comfortable working independently whilst also contributing as part of a wider team, with the ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
