The Role:
Salary £24,796 pay award pending
As an Apprentice Highways Operative, you will have a unique and exciting opportunity to be at the heart of a service that provides highways maintenance to the council.
You will learn to assist experienced operatives in maintenance teams carrying out minor highway and street lighting work, including- drain laying, trenching, timbering, steel fixing, reinforced concreting, manhole and gully construction, drainage repairs, gully cleaning, sewers / tunnels, shuttering, kerbing, flagging, block paving, maintaining service ducts, installation of street furniture and bridge maintenance works, footway / carriageway bituminous re-surfacing and the erection, repair and removal of appropriate illuminated signs, lighting columns, bollards, barriers and fencing, whilst following appropriate drawings and specifications..
Working within this small but dynamic team whilst combining practical on the job training with theoretical learning and development you will assist in setting out and working to precise levels in drain laying, trenching, timbering, steel fixing, reinforced concreting, walling in brickwork, blockwork and natural stone/masonry, manhole construction, sewers/tunnels, shuttering.
About You:
We are looking for an enthusiastic apprentice to join our team and kickstart their career!
You must be physically fit as you will be heavy lifting and able to carry out aspects of the job such as lifting/carrying/standing for lengthy periods.
You must be able to communicate effectively, working as part of the team to build strong working relationships and taking direction from those around you.
Being able to manage your own time, working under minimal instruction and completing essential paperwork to agreed deadlines is key to this role.
As this is an apprenticeship opportunity, you must be willing to undertake a Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative (Level 2) Intermediate Apprenticeship which will involve mandatory weekly travel to Salford College for two years. You will not already hold a highways maintenance or construction qualification at level 2 or above. This is because the successful applicant will be required to complete an (Level 2) Intermediate Apprenticeship.
You must hold GCSE Maths and English (4-9, or A*-C) or level 2 functional skills or be willing to attain these whilst undertaking your apprenticeship.
You must have, or commit to acquiring, a full driving licence within 2 years of appointment to the post at your own expense.
