Birmingham City Council is seeking a dedicated Parks and Play Technical Officer to lead the delivery of safe, high-quality play spaces across the city. As the UK's first accredited Nature City, Birmingham is delivering its ambitious City of Nature 25-Year Plan, creating greener, healthier and more connected communities. This is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the future of Birmingham's playgrounds, parks and open spaces, supporting children's play, active lifestyles and community wellbeing.
As the Council's primary play officer, you will oversee a team of Playground Technicians, manage inspection and maintenance programmes, and ensure all sites meet rigorous safety and quality standards. You will play a key role in ensuring Birmingham's play spaces remain welcoming, inclusive and engaging environments that encourage children and families to connect with the city's parks and natural spaces.
The role involves coordinating health and safety compliance, including conducting and organising playground and site inspections, managing maintenance programmes, and acting as the key contact for emergency repairs. You will work closely with suppliers, contractors and community partners to deliver improvements, source equipment and support the successful delivery of capital projects.
You will also contribute to the design and development of playgrounds and park infrastructure, helping to create inspiring spaces that support the objectives of the City of Nature 25-Year Plan while meeting the needs of Birmingham's diverse communities. The role includes identifying funding opportunities and supporting investment programmes that enhance the city's play and recreational facilities.
We are looking for someone with experience in playground maintenance or a related environment, strong organisational and leadership skills, and the ability to manage budgets, contracts and operational programmes. You should be confident working independently, engaging with stakeholders and the public, and ensuring the highest standards of safety and service delivery. Knowledge of play provision, parks and open space management is essential, together with a commitment to excellent customer service and continuous improvement.
A valid driving licence is required, and you must be willing to adapt your working hours to meet operational requirements.
Please upload your up-to-date CV via the attachments part of your application, this is required for shortlisting. Unfortunately, we cannot consider any applications without a CV attached
