We’re recruiting an Application Support Engineer to work in the Directorate Support Team, supporting a varied range of business critical Directorate applications, including CAZ (Clean Air Zone), BLE (Bus Lane Enforcement), Parking services, Transportation, Civil Enforcement, Planning, Licencing, Education services, Libraries, Leisure services and Bereavement services,
You’ll work closely with both technical / business teams and suppliers to provide BAU (Business As Usual) support for end users. You’ll be dealing with application / system issues requiring analytical skills to manage and see issues through to resolution. The role also involves supporting upgrades and integrations between systems, ensuring data flows correctly across platforms and that failures are identified and resolved quickly.
What This Role Involves (In Practice)
Working as an active team member for investigating, owning and resolving issues / requests logged by application users, or issues identified via system monitoring and alerting. Managing system access. Working with technical teams, key business users and suppliers to find resolutions and identify root causes. Undertaking application configuration and supporting integrations between systems and data transfers where applicable.
What We’re Looking For
This role suits someone who has good technical knowledge and understanding of IT business applications. Someone who is keen and willing to learn about and be able to support a variety of business IT applications and be an active, positive team member. Someone with good communication skills who can clearly explain / demonstrate technical issues / resolutions to non technical users in an understandable and courteous manner. Someone who can communicate clearly with technical colleagues, business users, managers and suppliers.
We’re particularly interested in candidates who have and can demonstrate experience in application support, ideally within local government, supporting a range of business applications and able to take ownership of complex issues through to resolution.
What Matters Most
Attention to detail, ability to diagnose issues that aren’t obvious within applications and across integrated systems. Confidence working with both technical teams, suppliers and business users. An understanding that this role is about service continuity for several business critical applications.

You’ll be working on systems that are central to how the Council operates, where volumes are high, processes are complex, and the expectation is that things just work.
It’s a role for someone who prefers solving real problems over following scripts.
