Designated Safeguarding Lead, Birmingham Adult Education Service
Acting Up or Secondment Opportunity
Grade D - £45,091 - £53,460 pro rata
Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Equal Pay Programme
Working 0.6, 21.9 hours per week.
Duration: Fixed term 1st September 2026 until 31st March 2027.
A rare development opportunity has arisen to Act Up1 or be Seconded2 to the role of BAES Designated Safeguarding Lead while the permanent post is recruited to. This is a good opportunity for staff with significant experience as a Designated Safeguarding Officer in an educational setting to gain experience as a Designated Safeguarding Lead.
The key duties of the role are:-
- Serve as the Designated Safeguarding Lead, promoting a positive safeguarding culture across the organisation
- Participate in strategy discussions and inter-agency meetings with authorities and the police
- Manage safeguarding incidents effectively while advising and supporting staff on welfare matters
- Develop, implement and oversee safeguarding policies and strategies to ensure organisational compliance and effectiveness
- Supervise and train Designated Safeguarding Officers

The successful candidate will have:
- An appropriate degree or equivalent qualification in a subject relevant to the area
- English and Maths GCSEs 9-4/A*-C or equivalent.
- Significant experience of being a Designated Safeguarding Officer in an educational environment and dealing successfully with a range of safeguarding cases
- Relevant management and supervision experience
- Experience of using and running reports from MyConcern
- Experience of working to deadlines and targets
- Experience of organising projects or education schemes
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Strong IT skills
- Ability to make good relationships with adult learners from a range of backgrounds
- Ability to synthesise information and experience to create robust policies and procedures
- Experience of writing and presenting reports
- Strong track record of personal safeguarding training
- Good understanding of Prevent and other key safeguarding issues in Birmingham

1Acting up – someone from a lower grade taking on a role at a grade above for a period from one to twelve months, with the chance to return to their previous role afterwards.
2Secondment – someone taking on a different role at the same grade for up to twelve months in order to broaden their experience, with the chance to return to their previous role afterwards.
