Help People Rebuild Their Lives Through Safe and Sustainable Housing

At Birmingham City Council, we are committed to supporting people experiencing homelessness and helping them move towards stable, long-term housing solutions. As a Temporary Accommodation Support Officer, you'll play a vital frontline role, providing practical support, housing advice and tenancy sustainment services to vulnerable households living in temporary accommodation. Working closely with customers, support agencies and housing colleagues, you'll help people overcome barriers, access the right support and successfully move into settled accommodation.

About the Role

This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. You'll work directly with households in temporary accommodation, supporting tenancy sustainment, coordinating move-on plans and helping ensure accommodation is safe, suitable and compliant.

You will:

  • Provide tenancy support to households living in temporary accommodation, helping them sustain their placement and prepare for move-on opportunities.
  • Conduct support visits, occupancy checks and property inspections, recording outcomes accurately and sharing relevant information with caseworkers.
  • Assist with making suitable temporary accommodation offers and ensuring licence agreements are understood and correctly administered.
  • Support customers to access benefits, financial assistance and wider support services that improve independence and housing outcomes.
  • Monitor tenancy compliance, manage minor breaches and escalate serious concerns appropriately.
  • Carry out health and safety inspections and support the management of repairs, maintenance and property standards.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, accommodation providers and partner agencies to deliver effective housing solutions.

About You

We're looking for a customer-focused individual who is passionate about helping vulnerable people and delivering high-quality housing services.

You will bring:

  • Experience working in a customer-facing environment, ideally within housing, homelessness or support services.
  • Experience supporting customers with complex needs, vulnerabilities or challenging circumstances.
  • Knowledge of homelessness legislation, housing law, welfare benefits or tenancy management practices.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage sensitively and professionally with a diverse range of customers.
  • The ability to manage difficult conversations, deliver challenging messages and resolve problems effectively.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise a busy workload while meeting deadlines.
  • Confidence using IT systems and maintaining accurate records and case notes.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of some of Birmingham's most vulnerable residents while developing a rewarding career in housing and homelessness services.

We offer:

  • The opportunity to directly support people experiencing homelessness and help them achieve positive housing outcomes.
  • A varied role combining customer support, tenancy management, housing advice and property-based work.
  • Ongoing learning and development opportunities to build your housing and homelessness expertise.
  • A collaborative and supportive team environment focused on delivering excellent services.
  • Access to a wide network of internal and external partners working across housing and support services.
  • The chance to contribute to reducing homelessness and improving outcomes across Birmingham.
  • A comprehensive local government benefits package including generous annual leave and pension provisions.
