Birmingham City Council is seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Service Manager – Museums & Heritage to lead the commissioning, development and delivery of the Council’s museums and heritage portfolio at a critical and exciting time.
This is a senior, high-profile role with responsibility for managing the Council’s relationship with Birmingham Museums Trust and leading the development and delivery of the Council’s Heritage Strategy. You will act as the Council’s lead officer on museums and heritage, shaping policy, securing investment, and ensuring excellent governance, value for money and public benefit.

- Experience in heritage, museums, archaeology, cultural policy or a related field.
- Strong experience managing contracts or commissioned cultural services.
- Proven success in securing heritage or capital funding.
- Experience developing heritage or cultural strategies and policies.
- Knowledge of heritage planning and conservation frameworks.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage complex projects, finances and risk in a public-sector environment.
What you’ll be doing...
- Lead the Council’s relationship with Birmingham Museums Trust, including contract management, performance and value for money.
- Oversee the reopening of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, coordinating across council services and partners.
- Lead the development and delivery of the Council’s Heritage Strategy, aligned to planning and policy frameworks.
- Secure major external investment through heritage funding bids.
- Oversee delivery and governance of funded heritage programmes and capital projects.
- Act as the Council’s senior professional lead on museums, heritage and conservation.
- Build strong partnerships locally, regionally and nationally.
