Overview of the Role
Birmingham City Council are seeking a proactive and experienced Gas Contracts Works Officer to support the effective delivery and management of gas servicing, maintenance and capital works across the Council’s housing stock.
The postholder will play a key role in ensuring statutory gas compliance, contract performance, resident safety and service quality. You will act as a technical and operational link between contractors, internal teams and residents, ensuring works are delivered to programme, budget and required standards.
This is an essential role in supporting the Council’s responsibilities as a landlord and maintaining safe, compliant homes.
Key Responsibilities
• Support the management and monitoring of gas contracts to ensure compliance with Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations and other relevant legislation.
• Inspect and monitor gas servicing, repair and installation works to ensure quality, safety and contractual standards are met.
• Assist with contract performance management, including monitoring KPIs, service delivery, costs and contractor compliance.
• Investigate customer complaints, defects and service failures, ensuring issues are resolved promptly and effectively.
• Liaise with contractors, internal colleagues and residents to coordinate access, works delivery and customer communication.
• Maintain accurate records, reports and certification, supporting audits and compliance reporting.
• Support continuous improvement in service delivery, resident satisfaction and health and safety standards.
• Contribute to risk management, safeguarding and health & safety processes related to gas works.
Essential Qualifications
• Relevant gas, building, construction or property-related qualification, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
• Knowledge of Gas Safety Regulations and associated compliance requirements.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development in a relevant technical or housing-related field.
Experience
• Experience of working in a gas servicing, maintenance or compliance environment, preferably within housing or local authority settings.
• Experience of monitoring contractor performance and quality of works.
• Experience of inspecting or overseeing gas-related works and services.
• Experience of working with residents/customers and handling service issues or complaints.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
• Sound working knowledge of gas safety legislation, compliance procedures and landlord responsibilities.
• Ability to interpret technical reports, certification and specifications.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and customer engagement.
• Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external contractors.
• Competent IT skills, including the use of housing management or compliance systems.
• A proactive, problem-solving approach with attention to detail and quality.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential for this role.
