If you’re an experienced conservation professional looking for a leadership role with real purpose, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact on one of Birmingham’s most iconic natural landscapes!
Birmingham is a city where nature and community meet, and our Ranger Service sits at the heart of that connection. As the UK’s first accredited Nature City, we are delivering an ambitious 25‑Year Plan to protect and enhance our parks, open spaces and nature reserves, and our Parks and Greenspace Service is entering an exciting period of transformation and growth. Our Rangers bring these landscapes to life by supporting biodiversity, engaging visitors, managing habitats, and inspiring people to care for the natural world around them.
We’re seeking a passionate and skilled Senior Ranger to help protect, enhance, and promote these environments, ensuring they thrive for generations to come. You’ll work hands-on across a variety of landscapes, while guiding and inspiring the teams and volunteers who help care for them, and ensuring the park meets both ecological and statutory requirements.
You’ll thrive in this role if you have...
- Excellent communication and networking skills
- Strong organisational and administrative abilities
- Confidence in writing reports, producing plans, and presenting information
- The ability to manage deadlines and oversee a varied workload
- A flexible, proactive, and solution-focused approach
- Experience delivering environmental education for children or community groups
- A solid background in nature conservation, wildlife management, or habitat work
- Experience contributing to and implementing site or management plans
- Knowledge of Health & Safety, including experience conducting risk assessments
- Experience working with volunteers, the public, contractors, and partner organisations
- Proven ability to motivate, support, and lead teams
You will also need:
- A qualification in an environmental discipline or equivalent Level 3 experience
- A full UK driving licence
What you’ll be doing...
- Lead Ranger Service staff, contractors, volunteers, graziers, and partner teams to deliver high‑quality site management
- Oversee habitat management across woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, and urban green spaces
- Contribute to ecological site plans, biodiversity enhancements, and nature conservation work
- Monitor species, habitats, and ecosystems in line with statutory requirements
- Manage maintenance of visitor facilities, infrastructure, and site safety
- Deliver environmental education, guided walks, engagement sessions, and public events
- Build strong relationships with communities, Friends Groups, schools, and partner organisations
- Oversee externally funded projects, including agri‑environment schemes
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, biosecurity measures, animal welfare legislation, and wider Council policies
- Participate in the welfare and daily management of livestock on site (where applicable)
- Keep accurate ecological, operational, and administrative records using corporate systems
What we offer in return…
- Membership of West Midlands Pension Fund – with generous employer contributions
- Enhanced Holiday Entitlement – 30 days, increasing with length of service
- My Rewards Scheme – access to over 800 brands providing discounts and savings
- Health and wellbeing support – independent and confidential employee assistance services
