About the Role
We are looking for a Service Designer to join the Product function at Birmingham City Council, helping to design and improve services that make a real difference for residents, businesses and colleagues across the city.
In this role, you will contribute to the design of services, processes and experiences that span people, systems and technology. You will work as part of multidisciplinary teams, supporting the delivery of user‑centred, accessible and inclusive public services.
This is a great opportunity for someone with service design experience who wants to grow their skills, work on meaningful public sector challenges, and be part of a supportive design and product community.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Contributing to the design and improvement of end‑to‑end services, working under the guidance of senior practitioners.
- Supporting discovery, research and design activities to understand user needs and service problems.
- Helping to map services, identify pain points and co‑design improved experiences with users and colleagues.
- Working closely with product managers, developers, researchers and service teams in multidisciplinary environments.
- Applying user‑centred design methods to help teams test ideas, learn quickly and improve services iteratively.
- Championing accessible, inclusive and human‑centred design principles.
- Learning from feedback, data and evidence to continuously improve your practice.
- Contributing to the wider design and product community by sharing learning and supporting collaborative ways of working.
About You
This role is well suited to someone who is passionate about user‑centred design and motivated by improving public services.
You will bring:
- Demonstrable experience or exposure to service design, user‑centred design or related practice.
- An understanding of working in agile environments as part of multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong design skills, communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence to collaborate and contribute ideas.
- A thoughtful and reflective approach, willing to challenge assumptions and learn from evidence.
- A commitment to designing services and products with the user experience at the centre.
You’ll be curious, optimistic and open to learning - comfortable trying new approaches and working through complex problems with others.
Why Join Us?
- Work on services that directly impact the lives of Birmingham’s residents and communities.
- Be part of an expanding Product and User‑Centred Design function within Digital & Technology Services.
- Learn and grow alongside experienced designers, product managers and technologists.
- Develop your career in a supportive environment that values learning, coaching and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to the transformation of digital and non‑digital services in one of Europe’s largest local authorities.
