This is an exciting opportunity to join Birmingham Library Service, delivering library services across the whole of Birmingham. You will be managing the Mobile Library Service, Library Services at Home (LSaH) and the Prison Library Service at HMP Birmingham. With a particular focus of individuals who are not able to visit Birmingham’s network of physical libraries, all three of these services are crucial to delivering a comprehensive library service to people who live, work or study in Birmingham.
The post is based at Gravelly Hill, Erdington (home to the Mobile Library Service and LsaH) and involves both operational and strategic elements. It includes managing staff and volunteers, resource and budget management for each service (including library materials and vehicles), along with customer service delivery, monitoring, and evaluation. The role of Library Services Manager is responsible for longer-term continuous service development and improvement to ensure that each service strives to respond better to the current and future needs to of citizens.
You will be very people-focused and have a passion for how information, books and learning can improve the lives of children and adults from a variety of backgrounds across the city. Experience of working with a wide range of people and communities is required, along with the ability to work as part of a small team. You should have excellent and varied communication skills and be confident using digital and online technologies. You will need to be flexible and able to cope with change and have the ability to participate in promotional activities with groups of children and adults.
Confident and flexible management skills are core to this role. The Prison Service requires management of a service level agreement with HM Prison Service. The Mobile Library Service is central to supporting the current transformation of community library services (providing statutory mitigation for reduced opening hours and library closures). Library Services at Home will also form part of supporting the transformation libraries with a particular focus of delivering statutory services to some of Birmingham most excluded residents.
