Working 36.5 hours per week  

This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the UK’s largest local authorities as part of the Local Engineering Team in the Highways service. The team provides a vital frontline link for the delivery of highway services and offers specialist advice on a wide range of highway-related matters to residents, Councillors, Members of Parliament, businesses, community forums and groups, emergency services, transport operators, neighbouring local authorities, developers, and a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

The Technical Officer role involves supporting the design and delivery of highway improvement schemes, including Traffic Regulation Orders, traffic calming measures, pedestrian schemes, signage design, and works associated with Section 278 Agreements.

The postholder will contribute to service and programme assurance by ensuring appropriate controls are in place to monitor progress, manage budgets, implement equality obligations, manage risks, and ensure services are delivered in accordance with Highways policies and design standards.

The role requires a broad awareness of civil engineering principles, traffic management, and transportation engineering, along with a strong commitment to delivering a customer-focused highways service.

About You

We’re looking for someone who brings both technical awareness and strong interpersonal skills. You should have:

  • Knowledge of a wide range of highway-related projects.
  • Experience preparing reports and briefs in line with governance procedures.
  • Awareness of the Traffic Regulation Order process.
  • Experience engaging with the public and resolving issues collaboratively.
  • Understanding of engineering standards and policy issues relating to highways.
  • Experience monitoring or managing scheme budgets.
  • Awareness of designing schemes in line with engineering standards.
  • Good IT skills
  • Strong communication skills—written and verbal.

A valid driving licence is essential.
