Grade D - £45,091 – £53,460 

Golden Hello payment - £1,000 + £5,000 per annum; see below for further details and conditions. 

Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review 

Working 36.5 hours per week – Out of Hours

Shift Patterns: Set shifts based on Business Needs (these can be discussed at interview stage)

  • 8pm-6:30
  • 5pm – 3am 
  • 9pm – 9am
  • 1pm-1am
  • Working variable hours over a five-week rota.  Note that the rota is subject to change. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Approved Mental Health Professional to join Birmingham’s Adult Out of Hours and AMHP Team. The successful candidate will join a strong and supportive team which works throughout the City of Birmingham.

 As a Specialist Practitioner (AMHP), you will play a critical role in safeguarding individuals’ rights while coordinating timely and proportionate Mental Health Act assessments. You will work autonomously and collaboratively across health, social care, police, and emergency services, responding to complex and urgent situations. As an AMHP your focus will be to support the consideration and co-ordination of Mental Health Act assessments referred to the Out of Hours Team, with a clear focus on integrating equal opportunities into your practice.

You must be able to influence, negotiate and champion change and good social work practice with citizens with mental health needs, advocating appropriately for social models of intervention. We are looking for enthusiastic and flexible candidates who demonstrate leadership abilities and are committed to working in a multidisciplinary setting. 

You will be required to fulfil the statutory duties of the Local Authority and to work with the citizens of Birmingham in accordance with the Guiding Principles of the Code of Practice and The Mental Health Act (1983), (as amended by The Mental Health Act 2007)

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake Mental Health Act assessments and fulfil statutory AMHP duties
  • Triage and respond to urgent and complex mental health referrals
  • Coordinate assessments with health colleagues, police, emergency services, and partner agencies
  • Make lawful, proportionate decisions that balance risk, rights, and least‑restrictive options
  • Maintain accurate legal records, reports, and documentation
  • Support and develop AMHP colleagues through mentoring, supervision, and CPD

About You

You will:

  • Be a qualified and practising Approved Mental Health Professional with a minimum of 2 years AMHP experience post qualification is required
  • You should be eligible to be registered with Social Work England
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and relevant legislation
  • Be confident working independently in high‑pressure and complex environments
  • Show excellent communication, decision‑making, and partnership‑working skills

You must be able to travel to the team base within a maximum of 45-minutes when you are on shift or otherwise start your shift from the team base. The nature of the post requires you to have the means to travel city-wide as a member of a team that covers the entire Birmingham area.
