Barnet is a borough with much to be proud of. Our excellent schools, vibrant town centres, vast green spaces and diverse communities all help make it a great place to live and work. As a council we want to build on these strengths as we move into the future. We are growing and developing as an organisation to meet the challenges facing our borough and we are committed to working with partner organisations and residents to make Barnet even better. As an organisation, our staff are committed to Our Values: Learning to Improve, Caring, Inclusive, Collaborative – which drive everything we do.

About the role

In Barnet we are recruiting new positions to enhance our Domestic Abuse services and create a new Barnet Domestic Abuse Support Hub (BDASH). This will increase our capacity for facilitation of Advocacy and Support services for victims and survivors of domestic abuse. This post will be 29.5 hours per week (0.8 FTE) and will be a fixed term role for 3 years.

IRIS is an evidence-based domestic abuse training and referral programme developed specifically for general practice, currently being delivered across 45+ areas of England and Wales.

The IRIS Advocate Educator is responsible for promoting the IRIS programme, building and maintaining relationships with general practice teams, delivery of training, and providing ongoing support and advocacy for patients experiencing domestic abuse.

You will coordinate and deliver training to staff in general medical practices plus on-going support for health professionals. You will complete risk and needs assessment, undertake safety and support planning and provide advocacy and support for victims and survivors of domestic abuse, following referral into the service via their GP. You will work closely with the IRIS Clinical Lead and VAWG Training and Engagement Specialist to promote the IRIS programme within Barnet and encourage local general practices to sign up to the IRIS programme.

This post is key to developing Barnet’s model of domestic abuse intervention in line with the Council’s Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy.
