The role offers the opportunity to work across a diverse range of Council services, undertaking compliance, systems based and investigative audits, many of which will be delivered independently. You will be trusted to plan and manage your own audit assignments, ensuring that work is completed to a high professional standard, within agreed timescales and budgets, while adding meaningful value to service areas and stakeholders.

In addition to core audit delivery, the role involves providing practical advice and assurance to managers and staff across the organisation, helping services strengthen internal controls, manage risk effectively and comply with statutory and non statutory obligations.

You will also contribute to audit related projects, investigations and training initiatives, as well as working collaboratively with external audit providers and the Counter Fraud Team, helping to ensure a joined up approach to assurance across the Council.

About you

As an Auditor within the Internal Audit service, you will play a key role in delivering a high quality, risk based internal audit function that supports the Council’s strategic objectives and governance framework.

Reporting to the Internal Audit Manager, the post-holder contributes to a planned and responsive audit service that operates in accordance with the Public Sector Internal Audit Standards (PSIAS) and relevant professional, statutory and legislative requirements.

About us

The Internal Audit Team sits within the Assurance / Risk and Assurance function and plays an integral role in supporting good governance, accountability and continuous improvement across the Council.

Working closely with service departments, senior leaders, Members and partner organisations, the team provides independent and objective assurance on the effectiveness of governance, risk management and internal control The team is made up of auditors with a broad range of professional backgrounds and experience.

There is a strong emphasis on professional development, knowledge sharing and collaboration, with auditors encouraged to maintain continuing professional development and support the progression of colleagues, apprentices and trainees.

Internal Audit actively promotes a customer focused and partnership based approach, seeking regular feedback from clients to improve the quality and impact of its work.

Auditors are expected to engage constructively with services, offer clear and balanced judgements, and develop innovative, proportionate solutions to complex financial, operational and governance issues. This ensures that audit work is not only compliant with standards but also relevant, practical and valuable to the organisation.
